Shvegel/Buttala Family History, Where did we come from?
Great Grandma Louis Fleck Mervar
Details to follow, one of her daughters was grandma Louis Marie Mervar Buttala ShvegelGrandma Louise Marie Mervar Buttala ( ) Shvegel (Peter) Marty (Frank)
Grandma's Maiden name was Mervar. (She's related to the Accordian Mervars for all you geneologists out there). She eventually married a Buttala, he died and she then married her brother-in-law Pete Shvegel Sr. (Marrying brothers-in-law was quite popular and/or customary in the past.) According to Vi Price, she eventually moved to California and married another man (Does anyone know the details on this?)
Gwen says... - In Grandma's obit it said that she was born in Mauverland, Austria and she still had a sister living in Austria. I also found in another book that Aloysious Mervar (6-21-1835 to 6-21-1907) which is our great grandfather was born in Zusenberg, Krain, Austria.
Peter Shvegel Sr.
Gwen also found that grandpa was born in Mitter Radenze, Austria on the 7th of January 1894. He died on 1-15-1961 in Milwakee, Wisc and is buried in Highland Memorial Park Inc in New Berlin, Wi.
I have a copy of his obit (very small) and the funeral book that people signed in etc.
One of our relatives is in the Accordian Hall of Fame!
Anton Mervar Button Accordion Manufacturer (1885-1942) Inducted on November 30, 1991 Back
After completing his apprenticeship in Slovenia, Anton Mervar moved to Cleveland in 1912 to pursue his venture in America, the manufacture of button-style accordions. Firmly established as a master craftsman, Anton moved to a new, larger factory on St. Clair Avenue in 1921. His accordions were shipped across the country and overseas, even to Slovenia. Expanding to retail other musical instruments, records and phonographs, Anton became a consultant to Columbia, Victor, Continental and Okeh, evaluating test pressings and recommending recording contracts for such Cleveland-style artists as Matt Hoyer, Louis Spehek, Anton Strukelj and the Lausche-Udovich duet. The craftsmanship and distinctive sound of Mervar accordions have contributed significantly to the enduring popularity of button boxesPete Shvegel Jr.
